The nucleus abducens is a rounded purely motor nucleus located in the pons right near the midline and superficially in the floor of 4.de ventricle . The nucleus sends its axon bundle forward/ventrally right again the pons tissue. The bundle appears at the lower edge of the pons, near the midline, and forms the nervus abducens that controls the outer straight eye muscle (musculus rectus lateralis).
The motor neurons in the nucleus are not controlled by the tractus cortico-nuclearis. The nucleus abducens is connected to the orbital system of the fasciculus longitudinalis medialis and controlled from the centers of gaze
