Pit located on the anterior part of the wedgebone body, immersed in the bone formation known as the "Turkish saddle" (sella turcica) and storage place for the
pituitary gland. The pituitary pit is covered by a tight duralock (diaphragma sellae) that only lets the thin
hypophysis stalk through and otherwise completely isolates and anchors the pituitary gland. For this reason, the pituitary stalk becomes worn off and the pituitary gland remains in the base of the skull when the brain is lifted out.
