Central nervous system

Systema nervosum centrale

CNS, cns

Consists of the brain (encephalon) and spinal cord (medulla spinalis).

The brain and spinal cord are the body's most complex organs and have as their primary task to enable as diverse and as rational behaviour as possible.

The brain is composed of approx. 100 billion neurons and of at least as many glial cells.

A uniquely large part, >50%, of the brain's genome is considered to be constantly active.
