The soma and dendrites of the nerve cell with attached nerve endings/boutons are embedded in a dense mass of glial protrusions, especially astrocyte protrusions. Among other things, the committees' task is to "suck up/pump up" transmitter substance and various ions released in connection with synaptic activity; in other words, to ensure that there is a balanced composition in the extracellular space of the nervous tissue.
