During its course down through the throat and chest cavity, the n.vagus emits a large number of thin bundles of nerve fibers. These preganglionic nerve fibers form nerve braids - including the cardiacus plexus and pulmonalis plexus - in front of the vertebral column and here contact postganglionic parasympathetic neurons that connect to the heart, lungs and esophagus.
