Belongs to the basal ganglia and is developmentally the oldest part of the corpus striatum.
The pale nucleus together with the shell nucleus (putamen) forms the so-called lentiformis nucleus.
The globus pallidus (GP) is divided into two sections, an external, external (GPe), and an internal, internal (GPi), of the lamina medullaris medialis. Both GPe and GPi are inhibitory, GABA-ergic and tonically active with frequencies around 70Hz.
Among other things, Globus pallidus receives a serotonin inflow of signals from the upper group of rafe nuclei.
