Intermediate gray matter of the spinal cord

Substantia grisea intermedia (Medulla spinalis)

The portion of grey matter of the spinal cord between the hind and fore horns. The area can, in the cross-sectional image, be said to correspond to the transverse of the grey H. Within the thoracic and upper lumbar spinal cord, parts of the intermediate gray matter form the lateral horn of the spinal cord (cornu laterale).

The tractus spino-reticularis , tractus spinocerebellaris anterior and tractus spinocerebellaris rostralis originate from nerve cell bodies in the intermediate gray matter of the spinal cord.

In addition, parts of the pain-mediating paleo-spinothalamic system emanate from the intermediate gray matter of the spinal cord, which spreads the slow, burning and "frightening" pain delivered into the spinal cord by omyelinicated axons (C fibers ).
