The inner part of the pale nucleus (GPi) belongs to the basal ganglia. The nucleus exhibits inhibitory (GABA-erg) tonic self-activity with a discharge frequency around 70 Hz.
GPi, together with the loose part of the black nucleus (SNr), more or less, constitutes a functional unit GPi-SNr.
