Stem cells

Recent evidence suggests that some ependymal cells, and/or cells hidden among the ependymal cells, in the adult brain retain the ability to divide and develop into neurons and glial cells. These cells are called stem cells. They are currently attracting a great deal of research interest. Their presence in the adult brain suggests the possibility that they could be made to produce new fresh nerve cells to replace those that have died or been injured.
