Cranial nerves VIII; 8

Nervus vestibulocochlearis

Balance-auditory nerve, Eighth cranial nerve

connects to the medulla alongside the facial nerve. The eighth cranial nerve can be divided into two parts: a balance/vestibular part and a hearing/cochlearis portion, each provided with a sensory ganglion; ganglion vestibulare and ganglion cochlearis, respectively. These ganglia are enclosed in the cutthroat part of the temporal bone (pars petrosa).
