Pituitary stalk

Infundibulum hypophyseosis

The thin cord of nervous tissue that connects the hypothalamus to the pituitary gland. The stalk travels through a small hole in the hard meninges (dura mater) down into the pituitary pit. The stalk is torn off if the brain is lifted out of the skull cavity (at autopsy) and the pituitary gland remains in the base of the skull under its duralid.
