A6

Located as a broad band for area 4, mainly on the outside of the hemisphere but also extends over the inside of the hemisphere, covering the paracentral minilobe (lobulus paracentralis). Area 6 together with areas 8, 44, 45 form the premotor cortex.

Area 6 belongs to the motor parts of the cerebral cortex and participates in the planning of the movements to be performed in the next time moment. Area 6 is particularly well developed in the part located on the inside of the hemisphere, in the paracentral minilobe (lobulus paracentralis). This area within area 6 constitutes what is called the supplementary motor cortex area (SMC), a section of bark that participates in the planning of movements that require intricate and thoughtful interaction between the two halves of the body. The area is also involved in the planning of movements that depend on "internal events", i.e. on one's own volitional decisions to change behavior.
