The anterior thalamic peduncle runs in the anterior girdle of the capsula interna.
The anterior thalamic peduncle consists partly of the filamentous masses that connect the anterior thalamus nuclei to the gyrus cinguli and the filamentous masses that connect the mediodoral thalamus nucleus to the prefrontal and orbitofrontal cortex.
The anterior thalamic peduncle was cut off, in whole or in part, in the procedure known as "lobotomy".
