A term that, when used to refer to peripheral nerves, refers to the nervous signaling both out of the central nervous system to a certain target area and into the central nervous system from a certain catchment area. An example : "The sciatic nerve supplies motor and sensory parts of the lower extremity". The expression means that the flow of movement signals to and sensation signals from parts of the lower limb is mediated by nerve fibers in the sciatic nerve.
